Today the British Film Institute is dropping a spectacular season celebrating Mexican auteur, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu to accompany his latest feature, ‘DIGGER’. This autumn the BFI will bring a curated selection of this five-time Academy Award-winning director, screenwriter and producer’s best works to the biggest screen in the UK, the BFI IMAX. That's right Digger and all the films mentioned below will be shown on the majestic BFI IMAX screen in Waterloo.

Tickets for Digger go on sale soon. The Cinema of Alejandro G. Iñárritu season goes on sale today Wednesday 2nd September at 12pm for BFI Members and 4pm for everyone else.

First, taking centre stage is the UK IMAX premiere of BARDO, FALSE CHRONICLE OF A HANDFUL OF TRUTHS (2022), described as an epic psychological black-comedy drama film that premiered at 2022’s Venice Film Festival.

Editors note: This film was filmed at 6.5K native through ARRI ALEXA 65 and with IMAX’s Digital Remastering Process, the IMAX Laser system is going to produce a very special presentation.

We’re also excited to hear that the recent 25th anniversary 4K remaster of AMORES PERROS will play on Sunday 27 September. This BAFTA winning and Oscar nominated film was Iñárritu’s debut feature film which revolves around 3 characters in Mexico City and how a road traffic collision affects the 3 different individuals. It is still celebrated for its grounded realism and exciting use of nonlinear storytelling.

THE REVENANT returns to BFI IMAX after its initial 10th anniversary run in March of this year. The gritty survival set in the northern frontiers of a young USA/Canada received an IMAX remaster for the anniversary and gives you a great 2nd chance to catch it again on Sunday 20th September. This jaw droppingly gorgeous film won DoP Emmanuel Lubezki his 3rd back-to-back Oscar for cinematography.

Lubezki’s 2nd Oscar win came from his previous collaboration with Iñárritu in the form of BIRDMAN OR (THE UNEXPECTED VIRTUE OF IGNORANCE) which also won Iñárritu the best picture, best director and best original screenplay. With a wickedly dark humoured script, incredible photography and music that started off a trend this one is not be missed at the BFI IMAX when it returns on Sunday 11th October.

If that doesn’t fill your appetite for large format, then perhaps a very special In Conversation on Monday 21st September with the director himself where he’ll discuss his decades-spanning career ahead of the release of his next feature, DIGGER.

DIGGER OPENS AT THE BFI IMAX FROM WEDNESDAY 2ND OCTOBER PLAYING IN IMAX WITH LASER.
